Dramatic changes are taking place in Essex with massive regeneration plans, two new super-ports and airport expansion at Stansted. Every year Essex Wildlife Trust comments on over 300 planning applications that that may have negative impacts on wildlife. Many of our objections are heeded by local authorities and we are proud that we have saved some sites from permanent loss.
Many important habitats such as ancient woodland sites and many other wildlife sites will be lost directly as a result of the proposed developments. The woodlands support complex inter-relationships that have evolved over a long period of time creating stability of the habitat. Once ancient woodlands are destroyed they are lost forever - they can never be recreated.
Wildlife areas are important as a leisure time activity for many people wishing to escape the stress of living in urban areas. In addition they have economic value, not only in their produce, but they also make a very important contribution to the local economy. Not only will the initial impact of development have a major effect on the countryside, but the infrastructure that expands as a result will influence our quality of life.
The future of the countryside rests with the survival of many native species. Animals and plants have an intrinsic right to exist and it is up to us to protect them now before it is too late.
Essex Wildlife Trust is lucky enough to have volunteer planning representatives, who work across the county keeping up-to-date with new planning applications. Some of these local planning representatives get their information sent directly to them from the local council and a lot of monitoring is done by keeping a close eye on local newspapers.
The issues our planning representatives deal with are varied, but most are concerned with large developments. The cornerstone to this system lies in good old fashioned local knowledge. Volunteer planning representatives flag up those planning applications that may affect the wildlife in their area and send these to our Conservation Officer to respond accordingly. On occasions volunteer planning representatives also respond to small planning applications on behalf of Essex Wildlife Trust.
